The error usually means that the graphics card doesn't have the required features to render the game correctly. If the full error contains the words 'general protection fault' it can mean a few things:
1. Your graphics hardware is below the system requirements.
2. You don't have the correct version of your graphics drivers.
3. This can be triggered by a specific quest bug, but that wouldn't be on startup, so that's not he case here.
