I just went through the same thing, here is how to fix it:
Go in to your folder: origingames/MassEffect
open the folder called binaries
Right click on the MassEffect.exe and go to properties
go to the compatibility tab
make sure to check "Run in compatibility mode" for Windows XP Service pack 3
click apply and close tab
Open your game, it will work fine now

I finally got Mass Effect to run on my rig. I have a 8 core with 16gb ram running win7 ultimate 64 bit. I used compatibility mode selected win7 and administrator access. The game was purchased from Origin as Mass Effect trilogy. Hope this helps.

I used compatibility mode and selected win7 administrator access to resolve my problem. I kept getting Mass Effect has stopped working message. My version was the Origin Mass Effect trilogy. My system is an 8 core AMD proc with 16 gb ram running win7 ultimate 64 bit.

At what point does the error occur? While playing, or when loading?

Just to say that after update 1.0.2 EA considers my product key not valid... and what the technical support did to help me is to buy "revouinstaller" uninstall the game and reinstalling it... and how this can fix a "product key not valid" issue? noone knows... i just should have not buy this game...
