why won't my xbox 360 controller work for mass effect 1? it works for every other game on steam

The Steam store indicates whenever a game supports controllers.

For instance: This is from the store page of Trackmania Turbo.

And this is from the store page of Mass Effect:

As you can see, there's no mention of controller support.
