Mass Effect Origins : Research Project

Hi Mass Effect developers,

I'm doing a research project and I'm hoping you guys can help.

How did Mass Effect first kick off and start from the timeframe of    0 months - 24 months?
Did it first start on paper? with a lot of idea discussing, hiring writers to create the universe?
