Mass Effect 1 freezing

HI, I recently purchased the mass effect trilogy and when i play ME1, the game often freezes for 5 or 6 min then returns to normal. i read the fix is to lower the number of cores the game uses. is this still the fix? or is there something else that works better. i'm going to try it tonight but wanted to check.

So far so good. I downloaded lasso so I wouldn't have to keep changing cores every time I play.

A game freeze can have any number of reasons, did reducing the usable cores work?
