Mass Effect 1 crashing on Windows 8.1 after a couple minutes of play.

As the title says. Whenever I try to play Mass Effect for a couple minutes, it crashes and I am created with a box similar to this: http://i.imgur.com/DEV0V.png

Rendering thread exception; General purpose fault!

I am on Windows 8.1 with a GTX 770. The section of the game that I am in is when you go to the Citadel for the first time. I cannot progress. Please help!
