Lost saved content

I've made significant progress into the game and when I tried to log in again a month or two ago, I didn't have the option to continue my mission. The only option on the start menu was to start a new career. I'll do that if I have to, but I'd really prefer to pick up where I left off. 

Any ideas?

Do you still see your savefiles in the default location? Documents - BioWare - Mass Effect - Save

It looks like it. I followed your directions and there was a file in the "Save" folder that had the name "Profile.MassEffectProfile".
