Cannot launch Mass Effect 1

I bought Mass Effect 1 through steam and have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times. Even Uninstalled and reinstalled Steam a few times. However, Each time I try to launch, there is a message that immedately shows up saying "Mass Effect has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Please close the program." I am very frustrated that any other attempts to fix the game have not been made and am very close to asking for a refund.

Steam doesn't hand out refunds. EA does hand out refunds for digital products, but only if you bought them from Origin.

What are your PC specs? Is there more to the error message? Have you tried running the game in Windows XP compatible mode as administrator? Have you tried running Steam as administrator?
