Why do boosts not work

When playing the game the boosts and skill level that I have purchased with the very hard to attain tokens are inconsistent at best and non-existent most the time. I wasted my tokens on boosts that fail to help and skill improvements that provide NO assistance at all or drastically. One shot will accept backspin while the next ninehave no reaction at all. This is a definite design flaw that must be adjusted by the developers so the game can be trusted to perform as expected.
