DA: Origins launch issue and game performance

"Failed to start game (app already running"

 

I cannot launch the game anymore. I've tried verifying integrity of game cache, I've run it in multiple compatibility modes, I've uninstalled and re-installed the game multiple times. Messed with display settings. Once or twice when I did manage to get it to launch, game will not progress past the meeting of Morrigan. It 'freezes' (or rather will not let me respond to her, nor will any other buttons work outside Shift+Tab and Alt+Tab). When I contacted support and followed their instructions to fix the freezing, that's when I started getting the "failed to start game app already running" error. I've spent hours trying to get this frickin' game to cooperate, and because of those 'hours' I can no longer even get a refund.

 

Help. I'm going crazy. The only other option seems to be disabling my antivirus, and I really don't want to do that. I tried making an AVG exception and that didn't work.
