Patch 1.04 Can't Be Applied

I have DA2 on an external USB drive, and I just tried to install patch 1.04, but it told me that DA2 "could not be found". I'm assuming this is because it's looking for DA on the actual hard drive of the computer. Is there a way to make it apply to my installation on my USB drive?

The patch install routine looks for DA in whatever path is recorded in the Registry Entry for the program. 

If your machine reassigns the Drive letter every time you swap USB devices, it would explain the failure, (but it wouldn't explain how you can start the game consistently...)
