The game wants to start in 1280 X 768. To get the game running:
1. Change your monitors resolution to 1280 x 768.
2. Start the game and go into settings.
3. Change display mode from Fullscreen to Window mode.
4. Change your monitors resolution back to a higher resolution (while the game is running in window mode)
5. Change the resolution in the game to a higher resolution (in my case it was 1920 x 1080) and then change it back to fullscreen mode.
The game should now start properly

Are you using Windows 8? If so, then try running Dead Space 3 in Windows 7 compatibility mode. That worked for me.
Edit: This worked exactly one time, then it went right back to the black screen on startup problem. I have no idea what the deal with that is. But I have found a solutin that seems to work. Go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\EA Games\Dead Space 3 and edit system.txt so that window.height and window.width match your actual screen resolution. That got it working for me.

Hello Sir_Dafticus,
I tried everything you said in your message, as well as what others players said but nothing works for me.
I bought Dead Space 3 two days ago. I received a key product and put it on Origin.
But all players seem to have the famous "system.txt" file... But I don't have it !
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\EA Games\Dead Space 3 --> this folder is unfortunately empty, so I can't change the settings concerning the screen resolution...
Is it possible to get this file ?
Can you help me please ? Or anyone else ? I guess I'm not the only player (who bought the game) who doesn't have the file "system.txt"
Thanks in advance for your help =)
PS : my configuration :
Intel Core i7-3615QM - 2.30 GHz
4.00 GB Ram
Windows 7 32-bit
Nvidia GT 650M

So you found the correct folder but it was empty? That's weird. You did replace "username" with your actual username, right? Anyway, I'll paste the contents of my system.txt file here, so you can try creating it yourself if you want to. I have no idea if that will work though.

There is one other file in that folder. It's general.txt.
