I just downloaded this game and was getting the "Failed to initialize display hardware" error. I was browsing through some of the solutions when I realized that for some reason there was not settings.txt file for the game in the appropriate location. Once I created the settings.txt file in the appropriate folders (had to create the Electronic Arts and Dead Space folders) the game fired right up.
Go to:
Users/"your user name"/AppData/Local/Electronic Arts/Dead Space
and created a settings.txt file
I found one someone had shared and used that to get my game started:

Yep, this has worked for me.
For anyone struggling, its important to create a file called 'Electronic Arts' (minus punctuation) inside /Users/UserName/AppData/Local and then inside Electronic Arts add a file called 'Dead Space' (minus punctuation). Inside Dead Space, right click, add text file, copy the text Gunny has provided into note pad and save as 'settings'. Then boot up Dead Space and everything should work.
Note: For Windows 8 users, App Data may be hidden. When looking at the folder viewer, click 'View' and check 'Hidden Items'. App Data should now be visible inside of your user name.

Just to follow up, I tried to launch the game again today and got the same error. I had to edit the settings file so the game launched windowed ('full screen = false' I think it was). Then it would launch. It didn't seem to want to go full screen from within the game though. The solution for me was to disable vsync.
I'm using an Nvidia GTX 650 with the latest Beta drivers. Could be the game ships with default settings of vsync enabled for full screen and just doesn't jibe with the drivers/card.
Anyway, setting it full screen with vsync disabled fixed it, and now it works like a champ.
