command and conquer generals hangs at splash screen and wont start in win7 x64

When I click on the shortcut for command and conquer generals and zero hour from the ultimate collection, and then select the generals game, it will show me the splash screen and then hang there indefinitely. It never goes any further. Zero hour will work, but not generals. The crazy thing is generals has worked in the past with no problems. It stopped overnight. I even reinstalled windows and then origin and the game, and still get the same result.

I've tried the compatibility settings, and the ini changes that are suggested to no avail. I have also installed the vc redistributables, as well as the directx stuff.

Any help would be appreciated.
