How do I share gems?

You have to play a game using a Rare Gem, and after the game, a pop up should appear asking if you'd like to share that type of gem with your friends.

When my friends give me gems, they never appear in Items when I click on the message but simply disappear.  Please help.

I have the same problem.  I have received many gifts which are supposed to be in my items box but they have never been there.  I have had many sent to me and have not seen even one of them in with my items in my item box.  Where are they???

If you're talking about the messages you get when people share Rare Gems from their phone now, then I'm pretty sure you don't have to collect them - it's just an informational message (which is why it only has a cross by it, and no Claim button). The gem(s) should already be in your Items box.
