I havent played BF3 for a while, so i recently decided to come back, and now it tells me i need an update. I hit OK and then it takes me to a loading screen. Then, it gives me an error message and says "There are no items available for purchase at this time." Also, at the update download screen, for the release date, it says "TBA" if that helps... I really need help with this as i am currently unable to play with my friends and have not figured out how to fix this...

OP have you tried deleting the base game data (not your saves or DLC) and then reinstalling the game so it tries a fresh update?

Was this ever resolved? I'm having the same problem
The Xbox Live marketplace is currently experiencing issues, but Microsoft is already working toward a fix. From their support website:
We're aware that our members are having trouble when trying to find content in the Xbox Store. Our team is diligently investigating the issue and we are working toward a fix as expediently as possible. We're very grateful for your patience while we work, we'll update you on our progress when we have more information!

Well, have you read my post above when you posted yours?
It should probably work again now, the Xbox team has worked hard on fixing any issues with the marketplace.
